He talks of threats made to him at the World Cup after refereeing a game between Samoa and South Africa, who were in the same group as Wales, as well as opening up on a Twitter spat with I'm a Celebrity Contestant Nick Knowles, who was unhappy with how Owens refereed an England versus Scotland Calcutta Cup game.
But while Owens is candid about events that happened, for the most part this is a hugely positive book which he feels will make the reader smile - 'even bring an occasional tear to the eye', he says. He rubbed shoulders with royalty, invited to a Buckingham Palace lunch with The Queen and Prince Philip, where they spoke to him about rugby.
This person from a council estate in the west Wales village of Mynyddcerrig had just had these conversations with the Queen and the Duke. They won't believe me back home, was my first thought," he says.
Autobiography of a face synopsis
His pride in how locals in his home village have rallied around and taken delight at Owens' achievements comes across loud and clear in the book. He's as proud of the people of Mynyddcerrig and nearby Pontyberem as they are of him. Despite travelling around the world, Owens has never wanted to move away from the area.
Indeed, he has changed from top rugby referee to local farmer these days, owning almost acres of land and taking charge of a large stock of cattle. It's very different to being a referee, but I love it, I really do," says Owens, who explains being a farmer was always his ambition. I guess I've gone from moving a herd of players around the pitch to a herd of cattle!
As for his biggest rugby regret, that didn't come in one of the many high-profile matches Owens took charge of, but actually in a Welsh Schools unders game when he sent off a Gowerton youngster when matters got out of hand between the teams. Owens says he was too blase about the match, turned up with the wrong attitude and what happened was his fault, not the young player's.
That moment made sure he "refereed every game afterwards as if it was a World Cup final," whatever the level.
